During the seven weeks between Pesach and Shavuot we are commanded to count every day and make a daily blessing. The significance of performing this mitzva of counting the Omer, is to illustrate the process of advancing up along the ladder of freedom which began by G-d redeeming us from Egypt, and came to its culmination at Mount Sinai where the holy Torah was given. The Torah guides us in the expression of true freedom in every aspect of life; it provides direction towards a life according to divine principles of kindness, purification and sanctity.

In our recent history, we were privileged to experience another special aspect of this period of time between Pesach and Shavuot, and just as then, in those days of redemption from Egypt, we too were given days of celebration by Hashem on the way to our redemption. The 5th day of Iyar is Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, and the 28^th of Iyar is Yom Yerushalayim, the day the eternal Jewish capital of Israel was liberated and reunited. This week, we again remember and experience those days of powerful injections of faith brought upon us by the G-d of Israel in the Six Day War. The weeks before the war were days of fear, as the ruler of Egypt threatened to throw the Jews into the sea. Then, within a mere six days, the Israel Defense Forces miraculously destroyed the armies of our enemies on the ground, while our Air Force incredibly wiped out the air forces of Egypt, Syria and Jordan while they were still parked on the tarmac. Once again, with the help of the Almighty, our people were delivered from the threat of annihilation by our wicked enemies. This astounding victory paved the way for the renewed and vibrant establishment of Jewish settlement within the heart of the Land of Israel. The physical bond with the Biblical cities of Jerusalem, Hebron, Beit El, Shilo and others, was restored, and all of Judea and Samaria was reunited and returned to the Children of Israel. Again, just as in the years of the Zionist process, the divine phenomenon of revitalization of the Jewish homeland and the Jewish people emerged. The ancient Jewish towns, and the hills of Judea and Samaria could now be brought back to a life of faith and Jewish values by the devotion of the Children of Israel. We, as people of faith, were not only elevated spiritually by witnessing this great step forward in our redemption process, but even more so, we recognized the divine mission and responsibility that was bestowed upon us. We realized it was our duty to proudly and persistently reinstate Jewish life on the barren hills of Judea and Samaria, re-establishing modern towns in the heart of Biblical Israel. More than 41 years ago, we returned to Hebron and from there the seeds of resettlement of Judea and Samaria sprouted. Today, it is gratifying to witness the phenomenon of 300,000 Jews living flourishing and thriving lives in Judea and Samaria, restoring Zionist faith and pioneering spirit to the State of Israel.

Obadiah Shoher writes about the ineffectiveness of replying to people out to destroy and recommends faith as the only "arguement" that works:

Whatever argument you muster, nihilists can easily counter it. The religious right to the Land of Israel: how do we know that God exists? The historical right: if God doesn’t exist then the biblical stories are mostly untrue. National right: why should a nation have a state? Most ethnic and religious groups lack statehood. The right of conquest: nihilists declare it expired. So don’t drop a good argument just because malicious nihilists have found a retort. Instead, amass your arguments as circumstantial evidence: every single bit of it can be refuted but the whole of it is plausible. On the contrary, attack the nihilists’ arguments. They have so few arguments—and those are highly theoretical—that they cannot build up a body of plausible circumstantial evidence to support their agenda.

If you feel in a Sophistic mood yourself, try an irrefutable argument. It is considered fallacious in Aristotelian logic because by definition such argument could be never disproved, but it goes well against the Sophists. Consider this: This land is ours because God gave it to us, and the Torah is truth to the last word. This is a statement of belief, closed to nihilist discourse.

Nihilism cannot assail true faith.

Caroline Glick provides a look at Israel's life as a vassal of the Obama administration:

Using the annual AIPAC conference as a backdrop, this week the Obama administration launched its harshest onslaught against Israel to date. It began with media reports that National Security Adviser James Jones told a European foreign minister that the US is planning to build an anti-Israel coalition with the Arabs and Europe to compel Israel to surrender Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem to the Palestinians.

According to Haaretz, Jones was quoted in a classified foreign ministry cable as having told his European interlocutor, "The new administration will convince Israel to compromise on the Palestinian question. We will not push Israel under the wheels of a bus, but we will be more forceful toward Israel than we have been under Bush."

He then explained that the US, the EU and the moderate Arab states must determine together what "a satisfactory endgame solution," will be.

As far as Jones is concerned, Israel should be left out of those discussions and simply presented with a fait accompli that it will be compelled to accept.
She ends with some advice for Bibi Netanyahu:
Israel's relations with the US during Obama's tenure in office will be unpleasant and difficult, and the damage that Israel will cause to that relationship by preventing Iran from acquiring the means to destroy it will be negligible.

Of course the sooner Israel refuses to take any money from the United States, and so frees itself to do what is right instead of what the United States wants it to do, the better...

There have been reports coming out of Israel of a push by Olmert – before leaving office – to divide Jerusalem and establish an Arab state in most or all of Judea & Samaria, the heartland of the people of Israel.

"Ho, Zion! Escape, you who are living with the daughter of Babylon." For thus says the LORD of hosts, "After glory He has sent me against the nations which plunder you, for he who touches you, touches the apple of His eye. For behold, I will wave My hand over them so that they will be plunder for their slaves. Then you will know that the LORD of hosts has sent Me."

So we will keep an ear on the news coming out of Jerusalem next week and an eye on major Hurricane Ike on its way to the Florida Straits.

Hurricane Ike in the Atlantic

Louis Beres concludes in an article this week in the Jerusalem Post:

A Palestinian state remains contrary to America's strategic interests, and to the binding claims of both national and international law. Naturally, and notwithstanding the incomprehensible government stance in Jerusalem, such a state would be especially dangerous to Israel. It should, therefore, be rejected by both presidential candidates, and by Israel's next prime minister.

Israeli "leadership" has left its self-defense – at least an important segment of it – to the US, a nation that certainly has interests that are substantially different than Israel's. Debka reports that the US radar system deployed in the Negev will be run by US crews and decisions on if and when Israel gets data, such as a Iranian missile launch, will be made by the Pentagon:

The FBX-T [radar system] will not only be able to track Iranian and Syrian missiles and aircraft but also keep watch on Israeli operations, giving Washington a handle for stalling them. DEBKAfile’s military sources point out that the Americans are suddenly in a hurry to have the system deployed in the Negev as soon as September. They will then be in position to forestall a possible Israeli pre-emptive attack on Iran’s nuclear installations should one be decided in Jerusalem.

The US has apparently used military data in the past to help Israel's enemies in a time of war. Placing trust in the nations is certainly a mistake.

Arutz Sheva reports on the Israel Government's turnaround vis-a-vis the Jewish community of Bnei Menashe in India. The community, more than 7,000 still remain in India, may now make aliyah at the rate of 300 a month for the next two years:

The Bnei Menashe claim descent from the tribe of Menashe, one of the Ten Tribes exiled from the Land of Israel by the Assyrian empire over 2,700 years ago. They reside primarily in the Indian states of Mizoram and Manipur, along India's border with Burma and Bangladesh. In recent years, over 800 members of the community have made Aliyah, thanks largely to the efforts of Shavei Israel, a Jerusalem-based organization that assists “lost Jews” seeking to return to the Jewish people.

Most of the Bnei Menashe community that has already made aliyah live in Judea & Samaria "mainly in Kiryat Arba, Beit El and Ofrah". Let us hope that the rest of the community settles in the Biblical Heartland as well and add their faith to the faith of the people in the Jewish communities there.

Debka reports that Russia has accused Israel of arming Georgia day before Syrian President Assad arrives in Moscow to discuss military cooperation:

One plan on the table in Moscow to punish Israel, DEBKAfile's sources report, is the establishment of big Russian military, naval and air bases in Syria and the release of advanced weapons systems withheld until now from Iran (the S-300 air-missile defense system) and Syria (the nuclear-capable 200 km-range Iskandar surface missile).

Samson Blinded, in an news brief reports:

During his visit to Moscow, Syrian dictator Assad is expected to reach an agreement with Russians to station their aircraft carrier group in Syrian port of Tartus. The carrier group would automatically bring to Syria the newest S-400 SAM battery, ostensibly to defend Russian vessels but really to inform Syrians of Israeli aircraft.

(Took this shot last night as a thunderhead passed by our neighborhood)

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse (Romans 1.20, NASB).
